Seeds
During winter a stocktake of the seeds is done and any old seeds are discarded. New seeds are purchased in winter & summer. Most of the seeds are purchased from local nurseries, this has proven to be the most convenient option.
Tomato, cucumber, beans, rockmelon, parsley, lettuce, spring onion, basil, borage, chive and when possible parsnip seeds are saved from plants grown in the garden.
Seed tape is made for carrot seeds. To make the seed tape a strip of toilet paper the length of the garden bed (940mm) is cut into three narrow strips. Two or three seeds are glued about 60mm apart. The glue is a mixture of plain flour, and water mixed into a thick paste.
To make this a little quicker a template was made for the carrot seed tape.
The seed tape is left to completely dry before rolling up ready to plant out.
When the carrot seedlings are about 20 or 30mm tall they are thinned out to one seedling every 60mm.
